Denzel

“You wanna come over and watch a movie with me?”

I looked down at the text and rolled my eyes.

“No thank you.” I sent back.

“Why?” He asked.

“Why would you ask?”

I switched back to CapCut and continued editing the video I was making for YouTube.

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” I typed into the text box.

My YouTube channel is my way to remember the scriptures that stand out to me when I read the bible. I use my flying videos for the visuals, and it gives my mind a break from reality.

“You wanna take a walk?” The message notification preview made me open the message. It continued. “Send me your address, I’m coming over.”

A smile spread across my face.

“Ok.”

Denzel was the only person I could think of for over a week. We met when I was leaving the airport after work. He was departing from the gate that I arrived in on my flight back to base.

When I walked past him in my uniform, he asked for my help determining his seat. He looked great and he smelled even better.  We exchanged numbers, and we’d been texting since.

I sent him my address and saved my video to continue later.

When he pulled up to the house, all the kids from the neighborhood surrounded the car. The kids love me on my street, and they were curious to know what kind of person I was meeting with.

As I approached the back of his SUV, I noticed the license plate “ANGLA.”

I walked over to the passenger door, opened it and sat on the leather seat.

“Hey.” He said looking down at my toes and then up my entire body and back to my eyes.

“Hey.” I looked him in the eyes but I couldn’t lock in. He was gorgeous. He intimidated me.

“Let’s take our walk.” He said as he switched the gear to drive. “Which way?”

His Ghanian accent was sexy to me.

I directed him to the college near my house, we parked and entered the nature trail.

He grabbed my hand, and we walked and talked. He was tall and confident, but I couldn’t get past how fine he was. I couldn’t believe that he was just single and available. I decided in my mind, we could only be friends. He wasn’t gonna have me standing outside his house crying at 3 in the morning stalking him. I just couldn’t believe he was that fine and wasn’t a player.

“Can we be friends?” I asked looking him in the eye.

“Of course.” He nodded.

“No.” I shook my head. “I mean, can we only be friends?”

“You’re not interested in me?” I could tell it caught him by surprise.

“Yes, I’m interested” I explained. “You’re like my dream boy.”

He laughed.

What I really wanted to say was that if he was my man I’d suck his d*ck like it was my pacifier. But why would I say that?

So instead I said.

“I have a lot happening in my life, and I’m not ready for anything serious.”

I knew that if I spent time with him one on one, I was gonna have sex with him. In a park, in a car, I wouldn’t care. Everything about him was sexy, and it felt dangerous.

I knew in my heart that I needed to wait a while to have sex. I didn’t want to feel disconnected from God. I needed to feel like the person I was with was sent by God to me before I did, and this wasn’t that.

“I understand.” He nodded. “Whatever makes you happy. This is just me.”

I sighed in relief.

“Can we walk back to the car?”

“Anything you wanna do.”

We stood across from each other and looked each other over again before embracing for a hug.

“Thank you for walking with me, and it was nice meeting you.”

I felt a little sting of disappointment knowing it wouldn’t be more.

“It was my pleasure.” He said sincerely.

When he left, I looked up the name “Angla” on Instagram.

I saw his picture immediately. There was a YouTube link in the bio so I clicked on it and was taken to a music video.

He’s an artist? I should have known.

I listened to the song and I couldn’t believe how good he was.

I understand why his presence hit me so hard.

He was fine and talented. I knew I made the right choice. I knew there was no way he could ever belong to just one woman.

I made a playlist of his music, and smiled knowing Angla Boy thought enough of me to take me for a walk. I blocked his number, and went back to editing my video.
